My name is Jean Grimard. I am currently studying in advanced standing towards a Bachelor in Music Education. I graduated from McGill University with B.Mus in jazz viola performance in 1986.
Since 1986, I have worked as a violin/viola teacher at the McGill Conservatory. I teach in the Suzuki violin program and I teach jazz violin as well. In addition, since 1997 I am also the coordinator of the Suzuki violin program at the McGill Conservatory. The program now counts close to 100 students and employs 10 teachers.
I have completed teacher training for Volumes 1 to 5 of the Suzuki violin method and I am strong believer in the Suzuki philosophy. I think that, given the proper environment and support, every child can learn music. I also believe that teaching music is not only about getting students to play better but also about helping them grow as human beings.
I have had the privilege of combining my jazz training and my knowledge about teaching children by designing jazz improvisation play-along materials for young violin students. I use these materials in jazz violin workshops I give every summer at the Montreal Suzuki Institute.
